Central Bedfordshire Council’s Stop Smoking Service and Biggleswade Town Football Club are joining forces this Stoptober to encourage supporters and members of the local community to ‘kick the habit’ by giving up smoking for the month of October and beyond.

In preparation for Stoptober, the nation’s 28-day mass quit campaign from Public Health England, which begins on 1 October, representatives from the Central Bedfordshire Council Stop Smoking Service were available at the Waders’ home game against Poole Town on Saturday, 19 September.

Specialist stop smoking advisors were on hand before kick-off, during half-time and post-match to hand out free ‘Quit Kits’, offer carbon monoxide breath testing and chat to fans about all the support available to help them quit this Stoptober.

Cllr Maurice Jones, Executive Member for Health, said: “This is the first time that the Central Bedfordshire Council Stop Smoking Service has partnered with a local football team and we’re delighted to have the support of the club and the players in helping to spread the Stoptober message and inspire local smokers to kick the habit.

“Smokers that quit with the help of the Central Bedfordshire Council Stop Smoking Service are four times more likely to reach their goal, so we hope that joining forces with the Waders will prove to be a winning combination!”

Waders’ Club Captain, Craig Daniels, added: “The players and everyone at the club are very proud to get behind this year’s Stoptober campaign. We’re urging supporters and local smokers to sign up for Stoptober and to get in touch with the Central Bedfordshire Council Stop Smoking Service for a great shot at stop smoking success.”
