I am one of the Practitioners within the Stop Smoking Service, having previously worked as a Senior Stop Smoking Advisor for 9 years.

I work alongside our other Practitioner to manage the service day-to-day, with joint responsibility for overseeing our specialist projects which support people who may find it more challenging to quit smoking.

My specialist area of interest  is Electronic Cigarettes (also referred to as  E-cigarettes, BCP’s or vapes). This project looks at new developments in the area of e-cigarettes and their use in a quit attempt. We are already an e-cigarette friendly service. This means we will support those who choose to purchase and use an e-cigarette, either on its own or alongside licensed stop smoking medications that we provide as part of their quit attempt.

As an ex-smoker who used the service to quit, I am passionate about our goal to achieve a smoke free generation and help current smokers to quit and enjoy a happy, healthy, smoke-free life.

Coming from a spectrum of different roles in various job sectors, including Engineering and Education, I felt at home once I got into Public Health. This new found passion is enriched by my current study of Bsc Honours Health Sciences, which has enhanced my appetite to contribute to helping others improve their health, wellbeing and all round lifestyle, to my maximum capability. The satisfaction I get from the success stories in this role are what drives me forward.

I currently manage our Comms project – leading our campaigns and marketing activity to optimise our outreach to as many potentially smokers who want to quit as possible, particularly for the most challenging specialist groups.

I have been a Stop Smoking Advisor for many years now and have done both face to face clinics and telephone support within the three local authorities. I am now the Lead in Mental Health Smoking Cessation within Stop Smoking Services, working in partnership with local MH units to train their staff to speak to their patients about quitting smoking and promoting a healthier lifestyle, as people with poor mental health live between 10-15 years less, than an average person.

I can honestly say I feel very passionate about the work I do, as it is all very close to my heart: building people’s confidence, supporting, and encouraging them to make those big changes in their lives and to go on and live a smoke free healthier, and hopefully longer happier life.

I have written some articles which can be found on our news page, the articles include smoking and weight management, how smoking can impact pets and how smoking impacts on stress.

I especially enjoy attending local events as this gives me the opportunity to meet new people and help raise awareness of tobacco and our amazing service.

I have been with the service from 2016 and having stepped up into the role of a Senior Stop Smoking Advisor has really made me appreciate what I do. Helping people stop smoking and celebrating their achievement gives me great pleasure and makes me even more keen to make the public in general healthier.

I also co-ordinate the Workplace project across the three local authorities; we aim to support workplaces in their smoke-free policies through the Healthy Workplace Awards Scheme. I can train the staff to assist their employees who are choosing to quit smoking and live a heathier lifestyle, offer support to those who need it and guide them to our service.

Whenever you are ready to quit, our fantastic team are here to help.

Before joining Stop Smoking Services, I worked as a dental surgeon for five years. I have a deep fondness for working in the public health sector that can improve health outcomes at the population level. I am passionate about encouraging the uptake of a healthy lifestyle and inspiring people to achieve sustainable improvement in health and wellbeing.

After earning my master’s in public health, I stepped into core public health practice to resolve a broad range of public health problems and issues. During my MSc, I learned a lot about the theory and concepts underpinning public health interventions which I am sure will benefit me while working in my role.

My current focus includes helping people quit smoking by giving them the right stop smoking medication and advising them on behavioural changes. I am also a primary contact for some of Milton Keynes’s GP surgeries where I look after the training of their staff, providing needed quit-smoking resources, etc. This opportunity to work in public health would enable me to expand my horizons, learn more, acquire key skills and experience; and ultimately contribute to improving health outcomes at a population level.
